About The Danish Institute for Sports Studies
The Danish Institute for Sports Studies (Idrættens Analyseinstitut/Idan), including its two branches, the international sports political initiative Play the Game and the Danish Institute for Non-Formal Education (Vifo), is an independent research centre originally set up by the Danish Ministry of Culture in 2004 and primarily financed by state lottery funding.
The primary objective of the Danish Institute for Sports Studies is to initiate and develop a broad range of social science research projects in the field of sports. Furthermore, its aim is to analyse political initiatives regarding the world of sports and stimulate public debate around central questions related to these initiatives.
Since merging with Play the Game (www.playthegame.org) on 1 January 2011, the Institute is now also responsible for organising the international Play the Game conference and promoting democracy, transparency and freedom of expression within the international sports community.
Since March 2013, the Institute also includes the Danish Institute for Non-Formal Education (Videncenter for Folkeoplysning, www.vifo.dk), which focuses on non-formal adult education and non-formal youth and children leisure activities such as the scout movement, and political and religious youth organisations.
Funding and organisation
The Danish Institute for Sports Studies is funded through a basic annual grant from the Ministry of Culture of 10.0 million DKK in 2019. The grant is regulated through the Danish Lottery Act.*
Moreover, commissioned research projects, external project grants and other commercial activities are part of the monetary funding of the Danish Institute of Sports Studies.
The Danish Institute for Sports Studies is directed by a board that consists of six members appointed by the Minister of Culture. The responsibility for its daily management lies with the director of the Institute, Troels Rasmussen.
The management group further consists of Rasmus K. Storm and Henriette Bjerrum. See all employees at the Danish Institute for Sports Studies
